Tuesday 10th of October
“Martha works; Mary listens.”
Luke 10:38-42
Martha was saying to Mary, “Don’t just stand there, do something!” Mary could have said in response, “Don’t just do something, stand there!” Mary helped Martha in the past and she was happy to help her in the future, but the King of the universe was there waiting to talk to her, and she had her priorities right. What was the point of being busy all of the time, rather than asking God first what she should actually be doing?
Martha was practising multi-tasking, which is even more common today. We see people trying to do everything at once and not wasting a second. Even when we are not working, we are on our phones, texting, watching or playing. How is God supposed to reach us through our worry and distractions, if we don’t give Him any space? Mary chose the better part of focusing on the one thing that was necessary, listening to Jesus and what He wanted her to do. Jesus, please give us the grace to sit at your feet and to listen to your Word without distractions, so that we can put it into practice.
