“Treat others as you would like them to treat you.”

Matthew 7:6, 12-14

“Treat others as you would like them to treat you” is called the Golden Rule because so many people accept it. People from many different faiths and people who do not believe in God all try to live to this standard. It is not only the law and the prophets of the Old Testament and the Jewish faith, but also the value that is the foundation of the lives of billions of other people.

We live in a time when there are growing divisions and hatred. Many people live in silos where they only listen to opinions that they agree with and feel that they have many enemies. Jesus asks us instead to see that we are all children of our Father in Heaven. If we focus on what we have in common and how we would like to be treated if we were in the other person’s shoes, many of the world’s problems and conflicts could be overcome. Jesus, please help us to live out your law of love because as Mahatma Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”.
