Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.

Matthew 18:15-20

Jesus challenges us to be courageous. We don’t have to fight in a war or take physical risks to show courage. We have to be brave in facing challenging situations and following through when we face resistance. The alternative to resolving personal conflicts is to avoid the situation and be bitter, or to gossip about the other person and make the situation worse.

Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. We may have to suffer for justice because the other person may reject us. We may have to follow through by getting support from others, and even from our whole prayer community. We may have to break off a relationship completely if the person doesn’t listen. But Jesus gives our church community power because where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there among us.
